STAFF (2019-03-23). Commemorating 40 Years of "Injustice for All" truthout.org I don't look forward to anniversaries, in large part, because I'm part of a 40-year story of extreme violence. That story in and of itself is part of a larger 500-year story that I want nothing to do with: the arrival in 1519 of Hernán Cortés to this continent; an arrival that ushered in violence that continues to this day. That 500-year anniversary is akin to the 1492 arrival of Christopher Columbus; for Native peoples, both of those years represent the introduction of physical and cultural genocide, land theft and slavery. It also has nearly the same significance for peoples of African descent.

Commemorating 40 Years of "Injustice for All"
STAFF | truthout.org | 2019-03-23
I don't look forward to anniversaries, in large part, because I'm part of a 40-year story of extreme violence.

The 1942 Internment of Japanese-Americans Holds Lessons for Today
Emily Wilson | truthdig.com | 2019-03-23
With detention camps along the U.S. southern border and the president's revised Muslim ban upheld by the Supreme Court, Karen Korematsu thinks it's important for people to know the history of 120,000 Japanese-Americans, two thirds of them native-born citizens, who were incarcerated during World War II without due process. Korematsu, director of the Fred Korematsu Foundation, a civil rights educational organization, travels the country to talk to students about her father, Fred Korematsu, who refused to go to the camps. His case went to the Supreme C…

Joe Dibee's 12 years on the lam came to an end last August, when Cuban authorities detained the 50-year-old environmental activist during a layover in Havana and turned him over to the United States. | More than a decade earlier, police and FBI agents had arrested a dozen of Dibee's associates in the Animal Liberation Front and Earth Liberation Front within the span of a few months. Islamophobia and Hate at UCSC in Light of the NZ Terrorist Attack

How Individual States Have Criminalized Terrorism
Margot Williams | theintercept.com | 2019-03-23
The U.S. Department of Justice most often brings terrorism-related charges, but 34 states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws that make committing acts of terrorism — and, in some cases, providing support to terrorists — state-level felonies. | Most of these laws were created in response to the 9/11 attacks. In all, 27 states passed anti-terrorism legislation in 2002. | In some states, terrorism is vaguely defined. Arkansas outlaws "terroristic acts" but does not say that such acts must be ideologically motivated, a requirement under the federal terrorism law. Maine prohibits what lawmakers…
