Why Scott Pruitt Must Go
George Ochenski | counterpunch.org | 2018-04-10
The simple and inescapable truth is that Montana has been ravaged by mining and industrial activities. That's why we have a rather daunting list of federal Superfund sites in what we still call "the last best place." And that's why Scott Pruitt, President Trump's pick to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, must be replaced…

No "alternative facts" here — we publish the uncensored, uncorrupted news you rely on. Support Truthout by making a donation! | Two-hundred-year-old gun manufacturer Remington has recently declared bankruptcy, which has some gun violence advocates thrilled — but they should put away the party hats. | The venerable arms manufacturer is not going out of business, and the company will continue to produce guns after it's gone through the bankruptcy process. The confusion over what Remington's bankruptcy actually means highlights just how tangled the laws surrounding insolvency can be, as well as the importance of accuracy in conversations about business practices. | In February, Remington started making moves to file for bankruptcy protection, citing what some are calling the " Trump slump" in gun sales; numbers are dropping under the Trump Administration,…

Shell Has Known About the Climate Crisis for Decades
Eric Ortiz | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-09
Climate change deniers often make the claim that more research is needed to determine if fossil fuels are warming the earth. But while the energy industry foments scientific uncertainty, internal research from Royal Dutch Shell confirms the company knew about the science of global warming decades ago and then hid the knowledge. | Dutch journalist Jelmer Mommers of De Correspondent, unearthed a Shell report from 1988 called " The Greenhouse Effect" that calculated Shell's contribution to global warming and anticipated the multinational oil and gas company could be sued in the future over environmental damage. | According to Climate Files: The confidential report, "The Greenhouse Effect," was authored by members of Shell's Greenhouse Effect Working Group and based on a 1986 study, though the document reveals Shell was commissioning "greenhouse effect" reports as early as 1981. Auto Alliance Pushed Climate Denial to Get Trump Admin to Abandon Obama Fuel Efficiency Standards
Truthout Stories | 2018-04-08
(Photo: LanaElcova / Shutterstock) | The Trump administration officially announced Monday that it will scrap fuel economy and emissions targets for cars and light-duty trucks sold in the United States and set new weaker standards, effectively undermining one of the federal government's most effective policies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. | As the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times anticipated late last week, the two agencies responsible for auto standards — the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — both claimed that their internal reviews have found the Obama-era standards to be too strict, and that the agencies would go back to the drawing board to revise standards for model years 2022-2025. | The weaker standards, expected to be revealed in coming months and reported to be well below the current…

Republicans Will Double-Down on Trump and Invoke Impeachment Talk in 2018 Campaigns
Martin Cizmar, Raw Story | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-08
One of the candidates employing the strategy is Trump's old foil Senator Ted Cruz. | Republicans running for U. S. Congress have settled on a strategy that may prove brilliant or disastrous, raising the specter of impeachment to scare moderate voters into supporting them reports The New York Times. The idea of what ring-wingers call a "coup"–such as impeaching Trump for his misdeeds after revelations that show his campaign colluded with Russia–was the stuff on conspiracy theorists on the far right a year ago, the story points out, but today appears to be part of the mainline party's talking points. "The appeals have become a surefire way for candidates to raise small contributions from grass-roots conservatives who are devoted to Mr. Trump," the story says. "But party strategists also believe that floating the possibility of impeachment can also act as a sort of scared-straight. . .

Donald Trump: The Un-American President
Teodrose Fikre | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-07

Almost every one of us can trace our bloodlines back to a people who arrived on these shores from other soils. | The tapestry of our nation was woven by the toils of newcomers and dyed by the blood of forced labor. All of us are byproducts of a hope that past generations had for their children. Apple pie and baseball take back seats to the narratives of foreigners who made a new home here–there is nothing more American than immigrants. | Therefore, when Donald Trump takes to the podium to demonize immigrants and spew xenophobia into the public square, he is spitting on the foundation of our nation. Why 21st Social Movements Are Very Different from the Last Century
Eve Ottenberg, The American Prospect | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-06
A new book from social reformer Jai Sen explores the international age of protest. | In mid-March, a Canadian alliance of First Nation tribes led protests in British Columbia over the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. This action followed other indigenous protests in Canada and the United States over the past few years, over Keystone XL, the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, and the Bayou Bridge. One of the most widely covered of these protests, the anti-DAPL demonstrations at Standing Rock, was led by the Standing Rock Sioux, which unfolded in tandem with their lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers. Under President Obama, the Corps finally denied an easement for the construction of the pipeline. With little apparent care for the Sioux's concerns, President Trump promptly reversed that move. The network is taking extraordinary measures to cover for the president. | Seeking to recover from a storm of ethical scandals with a tour of conservative news outlets, embattled Environmental Protection Agency director Scott Pruitt sat down with Fox News' Ed Henry for an interview yesterday afternoon. Pruitt was surely hoping for the same softballs he has regularly received on the right-wing network.
